I wasn’t nervous because I’d be surrounded by three gorgeous girls in short shorts and bikini tops. Anxiety pumped too much blood to my heart because I didn’t know what to do. Putting on an act to gain acceptance and approval of Kiera and her friends wasn’t a challenge, but it didn’t feel right. We rode to the local burger hangout with the top down in Stella’s convertible mustang. I had only been there one time with my parents to buy some bottled water during a heatwave. The girls chattered non-stop and berated the entire beach experience.“Like who wants to spend a day at the beach picking up other people’s trash,” Monica said.Stella laughed. “I know. Like, there was some gnarly stuff there. What about that diaper Kiera found?“Gross!” the girls shouted and giggled. I laughed with them, because the idea of finding a used diaper on the beach really was gross. But picking it up to protect the environment was necessary and the entire project was a rewarding experience.Stella pulled into the drive through. She and Monica shouted their orders into the speaker. The car inched forward so Kiera and I could say which refined foods we wanted to help destroy our bodies.“What do you want?” she asked me.Great. Should I admit that I didn’t like junk food or let the girls think I was a normal teen, happy with a poor diet and not giving a damn about the world we lived in. Three beautiful faces peered at me, their skin glistening with suntan oil as they awaited my order.I smiled at Kiera. “I’ll have what you’re having.”
